Riverside County, CA (May 16, 2023) — The eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway were closed for several hours on Sunday after a crash involving two vehicles left three people dead and multiple injured. The accident happened at around 7:24 AM just west of Haugen-Lehmann Way in Riverside County. According to California Highway Patrol, a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban carrying nine family members collided with a 2022 Tesla Model 3 while traveling east on the 10 Freeway. The accident caused the SUV to crash into the center divider and overturn, ejecting six passengers and partially ejecting one.

A 31-year-old woman and two girls, aged 8 and 12, were killed in the crash. In addition, two other girls, aged 3 and 11, as well as two boys, aged 15 and 7, suffered major injuries. The adult driver and 41-year-old front seat passenger received only minor or moderate injuries. It is believed that the driver of the Tesla was unharmed.

Based on preliminary findings, CHP states that some of the passengers in the SUV carrying the family of nine from Anaheim were not wearing seat belts. The vehicle is designed to carry only eight passengers However, CHP is still trying to determine the exact cause of the crash. So far, evidence shows that the collision happened on the left rear side of the Suburban SUV.

Damages Available in Fatal Accidents

Whether you were injured in a crash, lost a loved one in an accident, or both, it’s important to know what your legal options are. In fatal crashes, surviving family members are able to claim damages under wrongful death. These include both economic and noneconomic losses such as:

  • Funeral and burial expenses,
  • Loss of consortium for spouses,
  • Loss of potential inheritance,
  • Loss of support, and
  • Mental anguish.

In addition, if the surviving family member was injured in the crash, they may also file a personal injury claim. This includes other types of damages, like medical treatment costs, lost wages, reduced earning capacity, and more. However, we highly recommend speaking to a knowledgeable car accident attorney if you are in a crash involving either type of claim.
