Vista, CA (June 22, 2023) — Two children lost their lives this past Sunday after being struck by a car on the freeway. The accident occurred at around 6:00 PM near Vista. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a green GMC Yukon had pulled over to the right shoulder of State Route 78 while driving eastbound. A 10-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl from the same vehicle ventured into oncoming traffic. Investigators say that a piece of luggage had fallen off the GMC, and the children ran into traffic in an attempt to retrieve it.

Tragically, the children were struck by a white Nissan Sentra in the No. 3 lane. Emergency services, including police and fire officials, promptly responded to the collision. However, the children were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the GMC Yukon, identified as 33-year-old Sandra Ortiz, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol. She is facing felony charges of driving under the influence, child endangerment, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Ortiz is currently held at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee, California, with a bail set at $500,000. Her arraignment is scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 PM. Meanwhile, the driver of the Nissan Sentra, an unidentified 41-year-old, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
