Los Angeles, CA (May 10, 2023) — One person is dead after they drove their car the wrong way on the 101 Freeway in East Hollywood. The crash, which caused most of the southbound lanes to be closed, happened on Monday morning at around 4:00 AM near Alvarado Street. According to California Highway Patrol, a red Prius was traveling north on 101 Freeway in the southbound lanes for unknown reasons. They then sideswiped a Honda heading south, causing them to collide with a pickup truck head-on.
The force of the accident caused both the Prius and one other vehicle to be engulfed in flames. Debris from the impact also flew to the opposite side of the freeway, causing accidents in the northbound lanes. Officials say that the driver of the Prius, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. At least two other people were injured in the crash and were taken to the hospital, though it is not clear if they were occupants of the vehicles hit by the wrong-way driver. So far, CHP hasn’t been able to determine whether the person who died was driving under the influence.
