Knowing Your Rights to Damages as a Car Accident Victim

Whether you or a loved one is injured in an accident, it’s essential that you know your legal options for pursuing damages. In California, victims injured in a multi-vehicle car crash through no fault of their own are able to pursue both economic and noneconomic damages. This includes tangible losses as well as intangible losses. Some examples of economic damages include:

  • Lost wages during recovery,
  • Reduced earning capacity,
  • Medical treatment costs, and
  • Vehicle and other property repairs.

These tangible losses can be measured by receipts, pay stubs, estimates, and more. However, for losses that cannot be quantified, victims may also pursue noneconomic damages, which include compensation for:

  • Lower quality of life,
  • Permanent disability,
  • Loss of consortium,
  • Severe disfigurement,
  • Mental anguish, and
  • Pain and suffering.

To understand how these damages may apply to a claim, it is important to speak with a knowledgeable car accident attorney. Insurance companies often ignore the long-term effects that injuries can have on your livelihood. However, an attorney will make sure that those considerations are included in any settlement demand.
